Ooh That’s the Spot

I really like this one.  The really odd face he’s making is due to him scratching his chin.  This is another Great Grey Owl, it’s hard to tell what he’s doing because of all his feathers.

Gear: Canon 60D, Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3

Settings: 1/250 sec, f/6.3, ISO 320

    • I really like it. As far as versatility goes there’s really no beating the range of this lens. It’s no substitute for a 50 mm prime but it is still great being able to drop down that wide, especially with wildlife being as unpredictable as it is. Everyone says it’s a bit soft at 500. I haven’t found that always true, but in less than ideal light it comes up. This lens requires good lighting, but then again the good photos are almost always in good lighting. There’s plenty of L series snobs out there who will say “why buy this lens when for $1000-1500 more you could just go with a canon?” The bottom line is for the price of the sigma lens there is no beating it. I’m very happy with it and would make the same choice a thousand times. (Although with a bit more money I might upgrade to the newer version with image stabilization.)
