Some Sedate Swans Swaying Silently Side to Side. Stupendous!

Here are some Trumpeter Swans I found in Anchorage near Westchester Lagoon.  Anchorage birders know it as Spenard Crossing.  I’m not sure if these two are residents or if they were just passing through, waiting for more water to open up farther North.  They had a juvenile hanging around them, probably from last year.  His feathers were darker and very patchy, basically he looks perpetually dirty.  He was on the other side of the lake and was ugly so I didn’t bother getting any shots of him (sorry, dude).  Anyway this mated pair seemed perfectly content with me being as close as I was, they barely even stopped to look up at me…

They were probably not disturbed by me because of 2 reasons: First of all they were on the fairly thin ice while I was standing on shore with a good amount of open water between us.  Secondly, they would hurt me.  Trumpeter Swans have incredibly powerful wings, supposedly strong enough to break one of my bones if they tried hard enough.  In addition to their strength they can be highly aggressive.  They have been seen attacking and killing a Canada Goose for no other reason than it got too close to them or their nest.  They are very protective, I don’t ever recommend trying to steal a swan egg (I don’t recommend that for many reasons, but let’s just focus on the aggression for now).  Despite their ferociousness they are quite beautiful and make for some pleasant photos.

The end. Get it? The end? I’m hilarious.  Love me.
